Here&#8217;s a teaser&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/?attachment_id=846\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-846\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-846\" title=\"K-1 Final 046\" src=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/K-1-Final-046-630x472.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/K-1-Final-046-630x472.jpg 630w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/K-1-Final-046-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/K-1-Final-046.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Client \u00a0had originally contracted with a self described &#8220;1\/4&#8243; custom builder&#8221; out of New Jersey to take an old Toby USRA Heavy Mountain,\u00a0 and completely rebuild it into an accurate representation of a\u00a0Norfolk and Western Class K1, 4-8-2.<\/p>\n<p>The client\u00a0paid good money for the original work, but the final product from the Jersey builder was, for lack of a better term&#8230;ABYSMAL. I could <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NEVER<\/span><\/strong>, in good conscience, turn out a product that poor (that had my name on it), and\u00a0THEN stoop so low as to expect payment for something so inferior.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few images of the locomotive\u00a0when I first received it from the client. After a thorough going over, I let the\u00a0Client know that the list of errors and issues literally ran well into the hundreds, and the\u00a0only way (IMHO) to make this loco &#8220;right&#8221; was to completely &#8220;kit&#8221; it, back into its original, individual\u00a0components and start over. That included torching apart the boiler.<\/p>\n<p>N&amp;W K1 drawing, Model Railroader, February, 1963<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/?attachment_id=926\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-926\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-926\" title=\"K-1 DWG MR Feb. 1963\" src=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/K-1-DWG-MR-Feb.-19631-630x439.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/K-1-DWG-MR-Feb.-19631-630x439.jpg 630w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/K-1-DWG-MR-Feb.-19631-1024x715.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/em><em>(image courtesy Kalmbach Publishing\u00a0 Co.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first step in the process was to strip the paint and blast the loco clean. The second was to take the torch and do a total disassembly, removing every last component.<\/p>\n<p>After it was taken apart, the\u00a0boiler courses were all individually re-rolled (to the correct diameter) and reassembled, including the firebox, and a new backhead was created. The unique N&amp;W domes, which were originally lost wax cast for the project the first time around,\u00a0were not even close to anything that was on the Roanoke Shop&#8217;s prints (they were too large), so they were totally reworked and carefully massaged to match the actual N&amp;W\u00a0specs. The one supplied was a\u00a0facsimile of an N&amp;W sports cab, but it had\u00a0several errors. Here&#8217;s the rebuilt, corrected cab, including accurate, custom made, half- round rain gutters and angled toe boards. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>NOW<\/strong><\/span> she&#8217;s N&amp;W!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/?attachment_id=847\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-847\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-847\" title=\"Joe's new cab... 001\" src=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Joes-new-cab...-001-630x472.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Joes-new-cab...-001-630x472.jpg 630w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Joes-new-cab...-001-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Joes-new-cab...-001.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At this point I needed to rework the cylinders and fit the rebuilt boiler to the frame, and the cab to the boiler. Once complete, and happy with the fitment, I started detailing the backhead. Like everything else on this project the original builder detailed it sparsely, and incorrectly. Using info supplied by the N&amp;W Historical Society, I did it up based on original images. Many larger loco were also equipped with a sheet metal shroud or cover\u00a0that encloses the\u00a0turrent and its associated piping. The N&amp;W K1, however, had an open turret, with all piping exposed. Here\u00a0it \u00a0is accurately modeled. The ones originally &#8220;attempted&#8221; by the first builder were warped (excessive heat) and poorly executed, so they were removed and thrown away. These were made and carefully fitted\u00a0using similar material from Special Shapes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.specialshapes.com\/index.html\">http:\/\/www.specialshapes.com\/index.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/?attachment_id=852\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-852\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-852\" title=\"Joe's running boards\" src=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Joes-running-boards-630x472.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Joes-running-boards-630x472.jpg 630w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Joes-running-boards-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Joes-running-boards.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once the running boards were installed, all the appliances could be hung, including the power reverse, Westinghouse dual compressors, compressor suction filters, Worthington BL4b Feedwater Heater, and associated tanks and piping.<\/p>\n<p>The air tanks originally supplied were not correct. They were too long and had plain, convex ends, rather than the appropriate inset, convex ends. I turned new ends\u00a0for all tanks, cut off the existing ones (shortening them in the process), and applied the new\u00a0ends. The original cistern deck was all dented with the seams broken lose from the sides.\u00a0 The original builder has installed a large weight in the tender that came lose when it was shipped to the client. The weight, bouncing around while in transit, trashed the deck. This one was originally from a US Hobbies NPK Berk.\u00a0 The deck, coal boards, bulkheads, collars, ladders, grabs and other details have been extensively tweeked per the prototype, as well as the addition of a doghouse.<\/p>\n<p>All\u00a0superstructure sheetmetal is ready for paint. He dribbled flux on the driver tires (and didn&#8217;t clean it off), which\u00a0left them corroded and deeply pitted. The ONLY way to remove the damage was to\u00a0turn the tires. They were 0.172 wide\u00a0from Toby, so I turned them to 0.145 (the current NMRA\u00a0spec.), resurfaced the treads, and centerdrilled the axle ends, for a prototypical appearance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/?attachment_id=855\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-855\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-855\" title=\"N&amp;W K-1 continues 006\" src=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NW-K-1-continues-006-630x472.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NW-K-1-continues-006-630x472.jpg 630w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NW-K-1-continues-006-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NW-K-1-continues-006.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like many older locos, the main rod, side rods and pins were worn and sloppy. All rods were bushed and new steel pins were made as replacements. The original crosshead guides were made of brass, and looked poor. A new, step-cut\u00a0set was made out of 12L14 steel, that were then polished and installed. Once I had the assembled mechanism rolling soothly, I applied the reworked valve gear, upgraded all fasteners to micro hex-heads, installed the gearbox and a Maxon high efficiency can motor. was very pleased with the results. It is spectacular!!! Everything worked fine and it runs very smoothly when it&#8217;s not on my dirty track ;-). I wish the MRC decoder I selected\u00a0had a Rule 17 lighting feature. I don&#8217;t like it when the headlight goes out in reverse.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So, I am 110% pleased. It exceeds all of my expectations. I thank you! Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
