{"id":1098,"date":"2012-03-20T08:25:36","date_gmt":"2012-03-20T12:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/?page_id=1098"},"modified":"2017-03-13T10:20:46","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T14:20:46","slug":"the-layout","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/?page_id=1098","title":{"rendered":"The Layout"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #99cc00;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">About the Proto48 D&amp;H Penn Division Layout:<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At this time, a 26&#8242; x 54&#8242; double decked, shelf-type\u00a0layout with herniated helix, set in September of 1952 \u00a0is in the works.<\/p>\n<p>General construction began in April of 2012, with the modification and upgrading of the layout space itself, as well as the construction and addition of a drop hatch over the staircase to the ground level; the hatch serving as a part of the layout room floor when closed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/?attachment_id=1327\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1327\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1327\" title=\"Penn Div hatch 101 4\" src=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Penn-Div-hatch-101-41-630x472.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Penn-Div-hatch-101-41-630x472.jpg 630w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Penn-Div-hatch-101-41-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Penn-Div-hatch-101-41.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Railroad\u00a0will feature 510&#8242; of visible, double-tracked mainline,\u00a0with D&amp;H and Erie symbol freights running\u00a0north from the yards at Carbondale, PA (WC Tower), with\u00a0pushers to the top of Ararat Mountain. In the opposite direction, D&amp;H trains from Oneonta, NY (Nineveh)\u00a0will first be seen at Lanesboro, PA, where pushers from Cascasde Wye will be added to the trains for the push up the northern slope of Aararat to the summit. Comparable Erie trains from Susquehanna, PA\u00a0will also be\u00a0occasionally featured, first appearing at the Jefferson Junction interchange to\u00a0start their southward assault on Ararat.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a track profile of the Delaware\u00a0&amp; Hudson&#8217;s Pennsylvania Division\u00a0(slopes between the red arrows is the modeled portion of the line):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/?attachment_id=221\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-221\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Obstacle Course for Challengers 1952_MF\" src=\"http:\/\/mattforsyth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Obstacle-Course-for-Challengers-1952_MF-630x439.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>(Image courtesy Kalmbach Publishing, 1967)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Northbound trains will enter the visible layout at\u00a0 West Carbondale (WC)\u00a0from\u00a0off-scene\u00a0staging, and Southbounds will enter\u00a0from off-scene\u00a0at Lanesboro, using the same hidden staging. Northbound trains will be making the run\u00a0up Ararat Mtn. and down the other side to Lanesboro. \u00a0Southbounds will do the reverse.<\/p>\n<p>Northbound pushers (with the exception of the Forest City Kicker)\u00a0will make the run to the summit and the return trip to West Carbondale (and into hidden staging to be turned). Southbound pushers will be making the run to the summit and the return trip to Cascade for turning.<\/p>\n<p>The NYO&amp;W single tracked Scranton Division\u00a0main (that paralleled the D&amp;H\/Erie from West Carbondale to Uniondale) will be included in the first 35 visible feet of Level I. The O&amp;W, running shoulder-to-shoulder with the Jefferson Division main,\u00a0will make the curve at the top of the hill, enter a Bellina Drop, and then descend below the benchwork\u00a0returning to\u00a0off-scene staging.<\/p>\n<p>Features will include:<\/p>\n<p>1. Switching and freight operations along the visible portion of the Division, between WC and Cascade Wye&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>2. Carbondale (south end) and Oneonta (north end)\u00a0Yard operations with the making up of north and southbound trains\u00a0(in off-scene staging).\u00a0\u00a0Run-through (empties-in-loads-out)\u00a0and reverse loop operations will occur along\u00a0with locomotive\u00a0servicing\u00a0and turning.<\/p>\n<p>3. Northbound push up\u00a0Ararat, for D&amp;H and Erie\u00a0symbol trains\u00a0and extras&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>4. Forest City &#8220;Kicker&#8221; operations&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>5. Southbound push up Ararat for D&amp;H and double-heading for Erie&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>6. Switching at Forest City,\u00a0Ararat, Thompson and Lanesboro w\/yard switching occurring in staging&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>7. D&amp;H and Erie steam and diesel locomotive pusher operations at\u00a0the Ararat Wye, \u00a0steam loco\u00a0turning (diesels do not) and return light running, back to both Carbondale and Lanesboro&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>8. D&amp;H\u00a0steam loco and diesel pusher operations at the Cascade Wye, loco turning in preparation for the\u00a0push back\u00a0up the hill to Ararat&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>9. NYO&amp;W &#8220;run through&#8221; operations, hauled by EMD FT and F3 diesels&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here are some basic drawings of the proposed layout.\u00a0 They have not been fully flesh-out (not all tracks are drawn in) and modifications are still ongoing. There are literally\u00a0hundreds of &#8220;Scenes&#8221; along the 35 mile stretch of the division that&#8217;s being modeled. The biggest\u00a0problem is trying to distill those down into two dozen or less.<\/p>\n<p>As an aid in modeling the selected scenes accurately, I have created a sequential &#8220;scene list&#8221; for both Level\u00a0I and Level II.
